Cookie policy

In short

This site sets no cookies until you choose to allow them. There is no advertising, no social network and no other third-party content. The only thing here that uses cookies is Google Analytics, which counts visits: it does not start on its own, and until you accept, Google’s code is not even downloaded.

Statistics cookies — only if you accept them

It helps us to know which pages people actually read and which countries they come from: it tells us what is worth writing. For that we use Google Analytics 4.

On your first visit a question appears at the bottom of the screen, with two buttons of the same size: accept or decline. Until then no request goes to Google. If you decline, nothing happens: the site works exactly the same.

If you accept, two cookies are set:

• _ga — tells one visitor from another. Lasts two years.
• _ga_<code> — keeps track of the single visit. Lasts two years.

They do not contain your name and they do not tell us who you are. The data is collected by Google Ireland Limited and may also be processed in the United States by Google LLC: the transfer is covered by the EU-US Data Privacy Framework adequacy decision and by standard contractual clauses. In our configuration the data is kept for no more than fourteen months.

The cookie that remembers your answer

Whatever you answer, the answer has to be remembered, or the question would come back on every page. We keep it in a technical cookie:

• hs_consent — it is 1 if you accepted and 0 if you declined. It lasts six months, then the question comes back. It does not follow your browsing and never leaves this site.

It is the only cookie the site sets even when you decline, and it exists precisely in order to honour that refusal.

Changing your mind

At the bottom of every page there is Cookie preferences: it reopens the same question, and your new answer replaces the old one. If you withdraw consent, Google’s cookies are deleted straight away and the measurement stops.

What may still appear

• Technical session cookies: only for people who log into the WordPress dashboard, that is, for those who run the site. A visitor never receives them.
• Cloudflare security cookies: the network that protects the site may set a short-lived technical cookie when it has to tell a person from an automated program, for instance during an attack. That is all it does; it does not follow your browsing. Cloudflare also inserts a small script that hides email addresses from address-harvesting programs: it is served from our own domain and sets no cookies.
• The form’s spam check: when it is switched on, Cloudflare Turnstile makes your browser contact a Cloudflare service to confirm that the request comes from a person. It does not profile you and does not follow you from site to site.

Language and preferences

Your language is not stored in a cookie: it is in the page address (/it/, /fr/, /es/, /ru/). Changing language changes the address, and nothing else.

Managing cookies in your browser

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. If you block them all the site remains perfectly readable: you will only lose the memory of your answer, and the question will come back.
