Palermo is a layered city: Arab domes, Norman mosaics, Baroque palaces and shouting markets, all within a few blocks. It is the natural gateway to a western Sicily programme and works just as well as a two or three night city stay on its own.
A few kilometres away, Monreale cathedral holds one of the largest mosaic cycles in the Mediterranean. The city has good accommodation at every level, event spaces in historic palaces and direct connections with most of Europe.
